Our Murwillumbah based weekend on 29/30 April was very successful.
On Day 1 we set out with 15 riders from the renovated Murwillumbah train station (now Northern Rivers Rail Trail head). The newly opened Stage 1 of the NRRT is built to a very high standard runs south through villages including Stokers Siding and Burringbar to Crabbes Creek. A highlight was the 500m tunnel on the way.
After a break at Burringbar, some riders and partners chose to return the via the same route to make a flat 50km route (and leave time for the art galleries etc), while most riders continued on a longer scenic return via the rolling hills of Cudgera Creek and Reserve Rd.
Dinner that evening at the Services Club proved popular.
After overnight rain, Day 2 commenced under sunny skies with the hills shrouded in cloud with 6 riders enjoying a beautiful west along the Oxley River valley to Tyalgum village, then heading south on minor dirt road with dramatic views of the main range to the west and Mt Warning/Wollumbin to the east. After a long climb over the forested western foothills south of Wollumbin we enjoyed a long winding descent through rainforest before emerging at Uki and then returning to town via the Rail Trail. (72km 730m).
This is magnificent cycling country and we expect to be back again next year.
