Northern Rivers Rail Trail (Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek)

About this event

This ride is a return trip along the Northern Rivers Rail Trail (Murwillumbah to Crabbes  Creek)

The rail trail was built for trains, so there are no real hills.

Distance  48km

Pace        Steady pace - speedo average 15-17kph

The ride will start at 9.30am and on the return trip stop at the Mooball Hotel for lunch - meals start at 11.30am.

On the return trip the ride will take a short detour off the trail to the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre (10:00 am to 5:00 pm) for visit.

The gallery warns "that the pathway that connects the Rail Trail to the designated Gallery car park is not fully accessible, and features inclines and several sets of stairs".

There are 2 tunnels on the trail, one being only 50 metres and the other being 500 metres.

The trail website advises the following - "The tunnel is not lit to preserve the glow worms and micro bats that inhabit it, so it has low light and poor visibility. Visitors should bring a torch and riders should dismount for safety".

Do not forget to take your sunglasses off when going through the tunnels.

Murwillumbah is about 140 km from Brisbane City and should take about 1 hour 40 minutes (Construction on the road may slow your trip).

What type of bike? - the trail is 6km sealed asphalt and 18k of heavily compacted gravel. Rain can cause washouts.  Wider tyred bikes are most suitable.
