Gympie North Pub Crawl

8 – 11 May 2026

The Gympie North Pub Crawl was a 4-day unsupported cycling tour of the area to the north of Gympie.  We had 9 starters albeit two decided they had not prepared sufficiently for the cold weather and consequently headed back to the big smoke.

Day 1.  Gympie South to Widgee (26km 506m elev).

Four cars and a trailer drove from Brisbane to Gympie South where we assembled bikes at a friend’s place before heading to Widgee.  The road is lumpy and the shoulder wasn’t the best.  Nevertheless, we made it by mid-afternoon; in time for happy hour at the Widgee Showgrounds.  The local community man the bar and kitchen to provide a great atmosphere for visitors.  The meals and beer were really good value…steak chips and salad $24, fish and chips $22.

Day 2.  Widgee to Sublime Farm and Brewery (58kn 974m elev).

After a cold night in the tent (5 degrees), we rose to a lovely fresh morning.  The bacon and egg roll plus a hot coffee at the Widgee General Store was on the money.  The ride back along the Widgee to Gympie Road was challenging; particularly when the local hoons made their presence known. We skirted the main centre of Gympie to cycle briefly on the Tin Can Bay Road to the Kin Kin Road turnoff.  This was a lovely ride along the ridge line to the Wilsons Pocket Road.  Heading Northeast along sealed, narrow but quiet roads, we arrived at the Sublime Farm and Brewery.   The previous weekend there were hundreds of music festival goers with caravans and tents.  Fortunately, there were plenty of grassed areas for our tents.  The owners Richie and Sharon were very helpful.  They arranged for us to charge electric bikes and mobile phones.  Nathan Cavaleri provided musical entertainment until 10:00pm and then a nearby caravan group decided to party on.  Nevertheless, we had a reasonable night’s sleep and self-catered for breakfast.

Day 3. Sublime Farm and Brewery to Gundia Pub (55km 808 elev).

The ride from Sublime to Gunaldah was again along quiet country roads which were mostly sealed.  At the halfway point we stopped for smoko at the Gunalda General Store, then it was off to the Historic Theebine Hotel for a quick beer.  A local family group of musicians performed for us while we partook of the delightful scenery. The next 15 km to the Gundia Pub (formerly the Prince Alfred Hotel) was reasonably flat.  On arrival we were met by Dan the owner who arranged for us to camp at the back of the hotel adjacent to the railway line.  Dan is a real character.  Although he was supposed to shut the Pub at 6:00pm, he agreed to serves us meals and allow us to imbibe in the local beer.  Some of the team kicked on but one sadly bumped into a pot plant on the way back to the tent.

Day 4. Gundia to Gympie South. (55km 529 elev).

While it rained most of the night, our tents survived the downpour, and we rose to another fresh morning.  After a brief stop at the Gunalda Bakery, we were on our way back to the cars at Gympie South.  The drive back home was uneventful, but all agreed that the pub crawl was a great way to spend four days on the bike.
