Strength for Cycling

Ian Chant | Published on 8/29/2025

Last night saw 19 members and friends come along to a presentation at Kieser Training in Coorparoo covering Strength for Cycling.  www.kieser.com.au

We learnt about sarcopenia, the loss of lean muscle mass as we get older. The presentation covered the typical cycling injuries such as sore back, neck, knees and balance issues and ways to mitigate those conditions so you can enjoy riding.

In a number of cases it was about strengthening very specific small muscle groups along with the major muscle groups.

Attendees got to see the equipment that can be very specific on a muscle group and the techniques used for strength measurement and monitoring strength improvements.  This makes the techniques specific and measured.  A number of attendees had their quadricep strength measured and were told the percentile of the normal population they occupied.  Clearly there are health benefits of cycling!

As well we got to briefly discuss balance. We can see in the photo below our bagman, Peter, showing off his balance skills – albeit he was clearly cheating!

Participants at the session were offered a reduced cost assessment with free follow up strength training for two weeks to get an understanding of how the process works for them.

More information about cycling and strength will be made available in our document library over the next week along with a September offer for BBTA members to undertake assessment and follow up strength training should they be interested.  Keep an eye out for future communications on this – it may even arrive in Paul’s September “What’s ON” communication.

Cheers
